چکیده

Our colleagues had a tough job to do. Using patientreported outcomes (PRO) instruments that may have lacked sensitivity to elicit subtle differences in outcomes important to patients, they compared PROs in oropharyngeal cancer patients treated with intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT) versus those in patients treated with intensity modulated photon therapy (IMRT) (1). Sio et al hypothesized that because IMPT reduces the low-dose bath to the anterior oral cavity, brainstem, and posterior neck, IMPT could result in less symptom burden and better quality of life (QOL). In the end, this hypothesis was not clearly proven, in part owing to challenges such as a small sample size, treatment across different eras, variance in systemic therapies, and unequal follow-up. This research was developed in an environment in which their institution had invested a fortune in the IMPT, a pressure we must acknowledge. This article focused exclusively on the potential QOL benefits promised by the new technology. We all appreciate the suffering the current standard of chemoradiation inflicts on our patients (2-4). However, when introducing a new modality into the cancer armamentarium, it would be optimal to introduce change within the context of the standard of care. Despite timely phase 3 data failing to show the effectiveness of induction chemotherapy in improving survival (5, 6), as the authors point out, 77% of the patients in the IMPT group received induction chemotherapy. This was a serious confounding variable, particularly in a QOL study. As has been

Dose distribution of protons and flux of secondary particles in breast proton therapy.

Introduction: Proton therapy is newer therapeutic method for early stage breast cancer. Proton beams release most of their energy in the Bragg peak and then will be a rapid decline in their end. When protons interact with matter, produce secondary particles like neutrons and gammas, and these unwanted radiation has no beneficial effect and also is believed to increase the risk ...

Caustic Ingestions

Prevention has a main role in reducing the occurrence of corrosive ingestion especially in children, yet this goal is far from being reached in developing countries, where such injuries are largely unreported and their true prevalence simply cannot be extrapolated from random articles or personal experience. Because of the accidental nature of the ingestions, the case fatality rate for pediatri...

Calculating Reaction Rate of Positron Emitters During Proton Therapy Which Are Used In Online PET Scan by Monte Carlo Method

Introduction: Nowadays, cancer is one of the most important concerns in human being's societies, more than one-third of people in around the world will get cancer during their lives. Physical dose depth distribution characteristic of protons in a tissue is determined with a low dose in the entrance region, maximum dose in the Bragg region, and rapid decline takes place near the...

Background Incidence of human papillomavirus (HPV)-related oropharyngeal cancer is increasing. There is interest in identifying healthy individuals most at risk for development of oropharyngeal cancer to inform screening strategies. Patients and methods All data are from 2009 to 2014, including 13 089 people ages 20-69 in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), orophary...
